How to Avoid Dental Implant Failure

tips-to-prevent-dental-implant-failureDental implants are the most reliable method of replacing lost teeth. They have over a 95% success rate. It’s not uncommon for dental implants to last for 30 years or longer with the correct care. The biggest threat to dental implants is a preventable infection called peri-implantitis. Here’s how you can safeguard your smile to ensure your dental implants last for a lifetime.

Commit to Good Oral Hygiene

Peri-implantitis is an infection like gum disease. It’s caused by bacteria found in plaque and tartar buildup. You can keep the infection at bay by brushing your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Floss your teeth daily and use a mouthwash to kill any bacteria your toothbrush and flossing couldn’t reach.

Practice a Healthy Lifestyle

Tobacco and alcohol can affect your immune system, increasing your risk of delayed healing and infections. It’s best to stop smoking and moderate your alcohol consumption to ensure your dental implants last.

Break Bad Dental Habits

Dental implants are strong, but they aren’t indestructible. Break any bad habits that may damage them, like using your teeth as tools, crunching ice, or chewing on your fingernails.

Treat Teeth Grinding

Bruxism can lead to dental implant failure from the pressure and friction put on them. A nightguard provides a protective barrier between the upper and lower arches to absorb the friction. It’s a great option to treat teeth grinding and clenching.

Limit Hard and Chewy Foods

You’ll never have to worry about any slipping or irritation with dental implants. You can eat just about anything because they restore 70% of your natural biting force. However, that doesn’t mean you should eat hard or chewy foods often because they put wear and tear on your new teeth.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Commit to semi-annual cleanings and checkups with your dentist. They will keep your mouth healthy and check your dental implants at each appointment to ensure there’s nothing concerning, like gum inflammation. If you develop any signs of dental implant failure, do not wait to schedule an appointment. Contact your dentist if you develop red, swollen, or bleeding gums.

You can feel confident your new smile will last for decades by giving it the attention it needs.
